Why we ask about irrigation before we ask about the stump
Most companies start a quote by asking how big the stump is. We usually get to that, but the first thing we want to know in Hermitage is whether there's a sprinkler system in the lawn and roughly where the nearest head sits to the stump, because the answer is almost always yes. Willow oak and sweetgum stumps planted along a property line often have an irrigation lateral running within a foot or two of the root flare, installed either with the original landscaping or added by a later owner, and neither shows up on a Tennessee 811 locate since 811 only marks public utility lines. Getting that information up front means we're not discovering a cut line mid-grind.
What changes a quote once we're on site
A stump quoted from a phone description or a photo can shift once we're standing next to it - a root flare wider than the photo suggested, ground softer than expected after a week of rain, or a lawn irrigation head sitting closer to the grind radius than the homeowner remembered. We flag any of that before starting, not after, and we'd rather walk a property twice than surprise a customer with a number that doesn't match what we quoted over the phone.
Step 1 — Tell us about the stump and the sprinkler system
Send a photo of the stump with something for scale, and let us know if you know where your irrigation heads or lateral lines run nearby. Most Hermitage homes have a system installed somewhere in the lawn, and knowing roughly where it sits before we arrive saves time on-site and lowers the odds of a surprise.
Step 2 — We give you a firm number
Based on the stump's size, species, and what you've told us about access and irrigation, we quote a real price rather than a range. If anything about the photo or description leaves a question mark - a root flare that looks unusually wide, a fence line close to the stump - we'll ask before finalizing rather than guess and revise later.
Step 3 — We grind carefully around what's underneath the lawn
We mark out where you've told us irrigation and other private lines run before starting the machine, and grind 6 to 12 inches below grade as standard, deeper near a driveway edge or slab. Equipment gets matched to the yard - full-size where a lot's open, a narrower walk-behind for tighter side yards common in older Hermitage sections.
Step 4 — We leave the yard looking like an HOA inspector already signed off
Grindings get leveled into the hole, loose debris gets cleared off driveways and walkways, and we talk through what you want done with the leftover chips - a ground stump produces noticeably more volume than most homeowners expect walking up to it.
